White Nights

Last year on Midsummer's Day, we went to Haapsalu, where we had a hotel right by the sea, and we could see from our balcony how the sky turned red briefly after midnight, and then it was daylight taking over again. This year we had the plan to go to the same hotel again, but it turned out that the hotel didn't operate anymore. Next best thing I tried to find something in Narva, but in all the hotels there, the sea view meant swinging on the balcony railing to get a glimpse of the blue over the tree tops. Thus, the good old Pärnu and Rannahotell saved Midsummer's Day again.

We walked on the beach and watched the sunsets. We sat on the balcony and drank wine. And we visited several new restaurants. In one of these, Scott's schnitzel flew out of the waitress' hands and took a very graceful flight to the ground. Karma is a schnitzel, I say - just a few minutes ago theywere ripping us off by serving us a couple of slices of fried bread with a few cloves of garlic for five bucks.

We also went hiking in the bog, where I looked unhappily at the raw cloudberries and imagined how much I would enjoy them, should they be ripe. We bought a box of local strawberries from Häädemeeste and drove back to the hotel.
