One Happy Island. White Sand and all the Geckos

We reached Aruba in the morning, first port day after leaving Miami 64 hours earlier. Before getting to the shore, we made a tactical move to the galley and grabbed breakfast. And wow. Eggs, hash browns, grilled tomatoes - absolute super-luxury.

On Aruba, we picked up our pre-booked scooter. The original plan was ambitious: hike Aruba’s highest mountain. However, the scooter rental guy talked us out of it. Instead, he sent us toward the California Lighthouse.

You can’t actually go into the lighthouse, so the views from the side had to be enough. The real stars of the show tho: geckos. Everywhere. Casually clinging to walls, minding their own business, stealing the spotlight.

We then started riding back, stopping at the first village we passed. One thing was immediately clear: the entire coastline from Oranjestad all the way north is lined with resorts. Resort after resort after resort. In between them - absolutely stunning beaches with fine, white sand that looks photoshopped in real life.
Our mission for the afternoon was simple:
• Buy a Starbucks mug, and
• Eat lobster rolls from a local bistro.
Outcome?
Mission failed on all fronts.

The Starbucks mugs were completely sold out. Every single one. As for the lobster rolls - every place had the same answer:
“Not today. Maybe tomorrow.”
Every. Single. Restaurant.

Defeated, we spent some time lying on the beach, doing what Aruba does best - sun, sea, and relax. After that, we rode back to the capital.

Oranjestad was… confusing. You could tell it must have been beautiful once. There were colorful houses scattered around, hints of charm and history, but overall it felt a bit neglected and slightly dirty. Roosters roostering around. At the same time, the main street was lined with high-end stores, creating a strange contrast: luxury shopping on one side, quiet abandonment on the other.

By this point, we were pretty sure of one thing: we’re not rushing back to Aruba.
The day ended peacefully, though. Pizza, cakes, and a movie that we fully intended to watch—but didn’t. We fell asleep halfway through.

And in the end, it turned out we didn’t even need the lobster rolls after all. After a full day in the Aruban sun, we left the island with our very own lobster instead. Slightly overcooked, a lot red, and answering to the name Gaili.

All in all: a good day, a weird city, great beaches, unforgettable geckos, and an unplanned lobster.
