Experience Washington D.C. Minivacation.

The morning started with getting out of the bed in eerie hours to catch the 8am flight. The flight that was smoothly delayed until 10am. In the airport I had the plan to quickly grab a coffee (that’s when I still didn’t know that we had plenty of time, right), but the plan was better than the execution by the coffeeshop employees. Being the second customer in line I waited more than 10 minutes to get my coffee. And so that they wouldn’t waste any of the disposable cups they had, that’s how they prepared my drink: foamy milk was in the big coffee cup and they poured espresso in two little disposable ones just to pour from there into the milk. And throw the small ones away.

The flight itself was fairly non-exciting, not like the “train ride” from airport to the city soon after. Turned out that we had the chance to pay 100 USD per person for the 30-minute ride instead of the regular 14 USD and so we found few more frugal tourists and shared a cab to town.

Right in front of the Union Market we stepped out of the car and made our way to the lunch. Scott had the Cuban sandwich and I took the long awaited cachapa from the best arepa stand in the capital.

We brought the bags to the hotel and walked through the Spanish steps and past the Estonian Embassy (Scott mentioned that our flag is quite faded) to Georgetown. We walked some on the streets admiring those lovely colourful houses and the pumpkin party decorations and went to the Spanish restaurant. I craved tomato soup and based on Google, Yelp and all the other reliable sources claimed that the best gazpacho is served in this eatery. Apparently none of them had ever visited Spain and eaten the gazpacho there, because that flavourless oily soup tasted like a cheap tomato juice from the lower shelf in the supermarket. We chose the Italian restaurant for the dinner tomorrow, walked a bit on the riverfront and back to the hotel.
